Horse chestnut

Aesculus hippocastanum

Horse chestnut seed stimulates microcirculation and improves the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the skin.

ORIGINS & DESCRIPTION
Horse chestnut originates from southern Europe. Today, it is planted as a decorative tree around Europe and North America. Horse chestnut seeds are used in medical preparations; they contain coumarin, tannin, flavonoids and triterpene saponins, of which the best known is escin saponin.

PROPERTIES & BENEFITS
Horse chestnut seed has the following pharmacological characteristics - it is antiexudative (prevents fluids from draining through walls of blood capillaries), anti-dermatic (prevents excessive interstitial fluid gain which causes increased passage of water and electrolytes from plasma into interstitial space and its reduced return to blood circulation), anti-inflammatory, astringent (tightens tissue) and toning (strengthening and refreshing). It stops infections and lipid peroxidation. It is used for treating chronic veins disorders such as edema, calf cramps, varicose veins, fluid retention and cellulite. It speeds up the process of removing harmful substances and has a regenerative effect on the skin. It prevents the degradation of hyaluronic acid, an important component which contributes to keeping the skin moist and fresh. Due to its anti-dermatic properties, it is very effective in skin care around the eyes, preventing eyelids swelling and dark under-eye circles. It is just as effective in treating varicose veins, fractured capillaries, pain, fatigued legs and poor circulation in the legs.
